Come train on the rowing machines this winter to prepare for our racing season in the spring! Stop by and give NSCR a try. Sign the USRowing waiver and bring it to practice!

Winter Session 1:  Practice schedule
November 7-December 16
  • Indoor rowing practice Tuesday & Thursdays 5:00-7:00pm at 4024 N Washington Ave.
  • Swim practice on Saturdays 11:15-12:15 at the North YMCA
  • No practice Thanksgiving weekend
 Winter Session 2: Practice schedule to be announced soon! 
 We will be training for our spring race at the Monona Invite in Madison, WI. The weekend of racing will also include a college visit to the University of Wisconsin.
What should I  wear and bring?
  • Rowing trousers or running shorts (nothing baggy!)
  • T-shirt and non-cotton long sleeve outer layer (layer in case we go for a run!)
  • Jacket/rain-jacket
  • Running shoes and socks
  • Water bottle
What if I’m not a strong swimmer? Do you wear life jackets in the boats?
That’s OK! We will continue to have our weekly swim practices in addition to our rowing practices to help build you into a more confident swimmer. We have swim instructors who give lessons only for our North Star rowers at the North YMCA that will be observed by your rowing coach.
We have light PFD (personal flotation device) that everyone must wear until they pass the swim test (treading water/floating for 10 minutes, and putting on a life jacket in the water). Even after you pass the swim test,  you are more than welcome to continue to wear your PFD while rowing if it makes you feel more comfortable on the water!
What can I expect at the first few practices?
If we are indoors, we will teach you the basics of the rowing stroke and how to use your power effectively on the rowing machines (called ergs). You will also do some strength exercises. After practice, we will have a snack and time for homework. If you do not have any homework, please bring a book to read during that time.
If we are outdoors, we will teach you the basics of the rowing stroke on land first, then have you observe practice from the coaching launch. After that, we will continue to teach you the basics of the rowing stroke, but in a boat!
Do you have scholarships for your program?
Our program fees are tiered based on family income. Please check the NSCR Youth Program Permission slip for more details on the fee structure!
